FighterSweep Staff No Comments Afghanistan, Air Force, Military Aviation, Photos, Video

NATO Special Operations Component Command-Afghanistan

Originally established in 2006 as the Afghan Air Interdiction Unit assigned to the Ministry of Interior and re-flagged as the 777th Special Mission Wing in 2013, the SMW is Afghanistan’s special operations aviation force.

SMW delivers special operators from the Afghan National Army Special Operations Command and General Command of Police Special Units on time, on target, and under the cover of darkness. The SMW employs a fleet of Mi-17 helicopters and PC-12 fixed-wing aircraft to conduct a full-range of special operations aviation mission tasks.
