The Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron (Blue Angels) have announced their selection of new team members for the 2017 season.
“I am inspired by all of those who applied this year and we have an exceptional group to add to next year’s team,” said Flight Leader and Commanding Officer Cmdr. Ryan Bernacchi.
Each applicant must be career-oriented, carrier-qualified, active-duty Navy or Marine Corps tactical jet pilot with a minimum of 1,250 flight hours.
Applicants visit the squadron at scheduled show sites early in the show season to observe the team firsthand. Finalists are selected mid-season and interviewed at the Blue Angels’ squadron in Pensacola, Florida. The new demonstration pilots and support officers are selected by unanimous vote. The Chief of Naval Air Training selects the Flight Leader/Commanding Officer.
Along with 3 pilots selected for the 2017 season, the Blues also selected a Naval Flight Officer (NFO) who will fill the role of #8. Additionally, the Blue Angels selected a C-130 pilot for Fat Albert, Supply Officer, Administrative Officer, and Flight Surgeon.
