Breaking News:  Late Thursday night an MCAS Miramar F-18C Hornet crashed in Twentynine Palms, CA killing the pilot.

The single seat F/A-18C Hornet was from the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing stationed at MCAS Miramar, CA. The crash occurred in Twentynine Palms, CA around 10:30 pm PST.  The cause of the crash is under investigation.

The name of the pilot is being withheld until identification and notification of next of kin. You can see the 3rd MAW press release here.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Marine’s family and the entire 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. More details as they become available.

Update: 29 July. The Washington Post is reporting that a Marine eyewitness saw the airplane break apart during a bombing run.
