At 0748 Sunday morning December 7th, 1941 the Japanese Navy attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
More than 350 Imperial Japanese bombers, fighter planes and torpedo planes attacked the island after being launched from six aircraft carriers.
2,403 Americans were killed, eight US Navy battleships were damaged with four being sunk, and more 185 US aircraft were destroyed in the surprise attack. The Japanese lost 29 aircraft and 64 personnel were killed.
The attack took place before a formal announcement of war was issued by the Japanese. US President Franklin D. Roosevelt later proclaim to the world that December 7, 1941, will be “a date which will live in infamy”.
