The aircraft carrier USS Bush (CVN 77) has gotten back into the fight against ISIS in a big way launching 20 plus airstrike missions in a single day last Thursday. Working out of the Mediterranean Sea the Carrier Strike Group, led by USS George H.W. Bush started attacks back on February 13th in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

The Carrier Strike Group consists of aircraft from the nine squadrons in Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8.

“The precision strike operations being carried out by the Bush Carrier Strike Group in the eastern Mediterranean Sea continue to demonstrate the tremendous warfighting capability and flexibility of the U.S. Navy,” Vice Admiral Christopher W. Grady the US 6th Fleet Commander said.

“By defeating violent extremists in Iraq and Syria, we are simultaneously supporting two separate geographic combatant commands. We remain committed to defeating Daesh, committed to our allies and partners, and committed to global security.”

This is only the third deployment for the USS Bush which was commissioned on Jan. 10, 2009. The ship is the tenth and last of the Nimitz-class aircraft carriers. Did you know that the USS Bush is the only aircraft carrier with a living namesake? Former President H.W. Bush was also one of the youngest Naval Aviators when he earned his Navy Wings of Gold at the age of 18 years old in 1943. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions in World War II.
